Day 39 – Sea day after Darwin on the way to Komodo Island
Everyone talking about Darwin gives you the 3 top rules.
1.
Don’t go in the water.
2.
DON’T
go in the water!
3.
DON’T
GO IN THE WATER!!!
We stayed out of the water and safe! According to anyone
from Darwin or talking about Darwin, if you go in the water either the sea
snakes, or the Box Jellyfish or the salt/fresh water crocks will GET you. If you stay on land you are supposed to avoid
the numerous venomous snakes or the dangerous kangaroos. We were actually glad
to leave Darwin without any serious injuries! We did have a nice time at the
Barramundi cooking class. It was a short
covered walk from the ship to the restaurant and they had lovely mango drinks
for us when we arrived. The class was
great and we got to eat the barramundi for lunch. After the short walk back to
the ship we picked up our afternoon bus tour for a taste of what Darwin is
like. Who knew that Darwin was attacked
in WWII by the same planes that attacked Pearl Harbor? And then, Darwin was
bombed over 60 more times during the course of WWII. It was never attacked on
the ground, but they were on pins and needles expecting an attack any day. The
tour included a local museum and various stops around town. A small, quaint
coastal town, but remember – DON’T GO IN THE WATER!

The day after tommorrow it is on to the island of Komodo. That is right –
think Komodo dragon! The talk today told us how dangerous these animals can be
and how they literally tear their prey apart after subduing them with anti-coagulant
saliva. You can’t even go ashore without being on an “official tour – with
guide”. I think this is a rule that
Ingrid and I will follow! The komodo dragons grow over 6’ long and over 350
pounds and have been known to eat over 80 % of their body weight (skin, bones
and all) in a single sitting. I have
seen some voracious eating at the Pacific Princess buffet, but nothing like THAT! Let
me see – 80% of 350 = 280 lbs. Yikes –
that pretty well covers it. We are assured that we will be safe. I think after
that briefing many people will stay on board. I don’t remember Sydney being so
dangerous.

Looks like the adventures continue - what fun! You two look happier and happier in each picture. Keep it up! --Kay
ReplyDeleteThe barramundi looked good. Just as well you didn’t have to catch it first. Glad you didn’t go in the water! There are lots of critters in Aus that want to harm or kill people. Just as well we are a friendly bunch though.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are safe. Ingrid you look more tan and relaxed with each photo. That’s great!
